Added noise in homodyne measurement of field-observables

چکیده
Homodyne tomography provides a way for measuring generic fieldoperators. Here we analyze the determination of the most relevant quantities: intensity, field, amplitude and phase. We show that tomographic measurements are affected by additional noise in comparison with the direct detection of each observable by itself. The case of of coherent states has been analyzed in details and earlier estimations of tomographic precision are critically discussed.

متن کاملHomodyne Tomography and the Reconstruction of Quantum States of Light
Quantum tomography is a procedure to determine the quantum state of a physical system, or equivalently, to estimate the expectation value of any operator. It consists in appropriately averaging the outcomes of the measurement results of different observables, obtained on identical copies of the same system. Alternatively, it consists in maximizing an appropriate likelihood function defined on t...
متن کاملUltrasensitive pulsed, balanced homodyne detector: application to time-domain quantum measurements.
A pulsed, balanced homodyne detector has been developed for precise measurement of the electric field quadratures of pulsed optical quantum states. A high level of common mode suppression (>85 dB) and low electronic noise (730 electrons per pulse) provide a signal-to-noise ratio of 14 dB for measurement of the quantum noise of individual pulses. Measurements at repetition rates as high as 1 MHz...
متن کاملUltrafast measurement of optical-field statistics by dc-balanced homodyne detection
The technique of dc-balanced, pulsed homodyne detection for the purpose of determining optical-field statistics on short time scales is analyzed theoretically. Such measurements provide photon-number and phase distributions associated with a repetitive signal light field in a short time window. Timeand space-varying signal and local-oscillator pulses are treated, thus generalizing earlier treat...
متن کاملPredictions of Violations of Bell’s Inequality in an S-port Homodyne Detector
Since Bell’s work [ I] was published a number of experiments [2-l 11 have been undertaken to test Bell’s inequality. Some of these experiments made use of correlated spin systems [ IO,1 1 ] such as the ones described by Bohm [ 121 and Bell [ 11. However, the system used in the majority of these experiments [ 2-91 consisted of a pair of photons correlated via their polarizations. The correlated ...
